Why Skincare Is Not Just for Women: Skincare for Men

Guess what, guys? A good skincare routine
doesn’t have to be complicated or difficult, and it doesn’t need to cost the
earth or empty your wallet.

When it comes to skincare for men, it can be a
little daunting trying to understand what’s suited for your skin, and what the
essentials are. That’s why here at Nuovo, we’re dedicated to making men’s
skincare easy, enjoyable, and effortless.

Why Men’s Skin is Different

When it comes to skin, men tend to produce more elastin and collagen—lucky you! This means that most men’s skin tends to be firmer and thicker, meaning that they show signs of aging later in life.

Men’s skin also has a stronger structure to help support facial hair growth, and facial hair glands produce lots of oil which in turn helps the skin to trap moisture and stay hydrated.

However, this does not mean that you don’t need to practice any sort of skincare routine. Due to the presence of hair follicles, many men find that their skin is prone to acne, especially around beards or moustaches, or has a rough texture from shaving.

The truth is that every person’s skin, regardless of gender, age, or genetics, needs a little TLC to stay looking its best.

Routine is Key

Having a good skincare routine doesn’t mean buying the most expensive products on the market, or applying 10 layers once a week and hoping for the best.

The secret to having great skin comes down to one trick: being consistent.

Whether you’re someone who only applies one product in the morning or someone who has a 12-step skincare routine complete with a hydrating face mask and serums, the thing that matters the most is that you do it every day.

Beginner’s Guide to Skincare For Men

The easiest way to create a daily skincare routine that sticks is beginning with the basic essentials: cleanse, moisturise, and use sunscreen. Most moisturisers have sunscreen in them, so you have no excuses!

Cleansing: Wash your face morning and night using a liquid facial cleanser. Avoid rubbing your skin too hard, or using a product that leads to irritation or dryness. If your skin is prone to oil build-up, choose a cleanser that offers gentle exfoliation. Look for descriptions such as “salicylic acid”, “glycolic acid,” or “benzoyl peroxide”. Cleanse morning and night, but if your skin starts to look red and irritated, then consult your skincare specialist as you may be over-cleansing (this is where you wash away the good oils!).

Moisturiser: A clean face will help your moisturiser to soak in better. A moisturiser helps the skin to repair, replenish, and stay hydrated leading to softer, healthier-looking skin. Moisturise in the morning and evening, preferably after showering or shaving.

Sunscreen: UV rays are incredibly damaging to your skin, and lead to premature aging, wrinkles, and all sorts of nasties. Make sure to apply sunscreen every single morning, with no exceptions! You can apply more sunscreen throughout the day as needed but always apply in the morning regardless of the weather.
