How often have you told yourself you cant spend money on a massage or facial, or you don’t have time to fit in treatment because you have to look after the kids or you feel bad spending the money, etc. As a society, we are consistently made to feel guilty for improving our appearances or spending money on ourselves.
The reality is that ‘Self-Care’ is not a dirty word! We need to normalise looking after ourselves before looking after anyone else.
The beauty industry as a whole receives a lot of backlash in the media, highlighting all the harmful effects of getting specific treatments done or showing influencers, with heavily filtered images, how we should look a certain way.
Too often, we get told as Skin Therapists that we are the reason people have self-image issues as they feel we are putting an unrealistic expectation on the community.
Ok, so obviously, the industry isn’t perfect. But what about all the positive sides of the beauty industry? Many in the industry still have questionable views, but beauty for many worldwide means confidence, empowerment, and freedom to express themselves. There’s a reason it’s called beauty ‘therapy’ because it makes you feel good, and who can argue with that?
At Nuovo Skin and Health, we are in the business of empowering our clients to embrace their differences and provide options for you to work on the parts of yourself that you may feel least confident about.
We acknowledge that building self-confidence can be a challenge and that beauty and skincare are not the only solutions. However, developing healthy habits and caring for yourself can definitely help improve mental wellbeing.
So, what does empowering self-confidence look like at Nuovo Skin and Health?
We validate your Narrative. We acknowledge your concerns and allow you to be vulnerable within a safe, non-judgemental space. Our mission is to celebrate all individuals and empower them to be the best, most confident selves.
Always Educating. We continually educate our clients about skin health in the clinic via our blogs or social posts. Ongoing education allows us to help you understand what is happening with your skin and how to make any improvements. It also helps shift our mindset and acknowledge that we are all beautiful in our own way – there is no such thing as perfect.
We understand our clients’ unique needs and cater to them. With open conversations, we can identify each client’s unique needs and tailor our treatment plans to them specifically. This means every client will have their own customised skin journey with us – we don’t believe in a cookie-cutter approach.
Your Skin Condition doesn’t have to define you. While our appearances are the first impression we put out to the world, they don’t make up our entire identity. However, they do play a massive role in how we interpret ourselves.
To help empower you to take a step towards being more confident in your own skin, we have put together a list of 5 easy confidence-building steps:
- Develop healthy habits. Use appropriate skincare daily, eat for healthy skin and above all, be consistent. Shift your intentions from covering up skin issues to nourishing your skin from within. You’ll look fabulous — and you’ll feel so much better.
- Be kind to yourself. Listen to how you speak to yourself. Instead of “I didn’t do as good as I should have,” try “I did the best I could at the moment.” Look in a mirror and tell yourself three things that you love about yourself. Don’t forget to jot these down somewhere for when you feel glum and need a gentle reminder.
- Treat yourself the way you would treat others. Imagine if you said to someone, “You look awful today. I can see your stomach bulging over your pants. You’ve really let yourself go” How would they feel? I’m sure they wouldn’t appreciate it, so why would you speak to yourself that way.
- If you’re tackling a persistent skin condition. Try to focus on the small wins and not the end goal. Compare your progress photos, you’ll be surprised to see just how far you’ve come.
- Practice self-care. I’ll say this again, but Self-care is not a dirty word, and it doesn’t have to be a huge investment. It can be as simple as sitting in your favourite chair with your favourite cup of tea, undisturbed for 10mins or getting a facial or wearing your favourite lipstick. Whatever it is, do something little every day.
It doesn’t matter what age or situation you are in; everybody has the power to be beautiful – all it takes is a little encouragement.
