Having great healthy skin isn’t just about having good genetics; it’s about building healthy daily habits.
What we put on our skin is just as important as what we put into our bodies every day, but the essential step is to be consistent.
There is an undeniable truth that choosing the right things to improve your skin quality can sometimes feel overwhelming and are difficult to start.
Here are our tips on how to build healthy skin habits.
Appropriate Skincare:
A simple daily routine doesn’t have to be overwhelming, and in fact, less is often more.
We recommend:
- Cleanse your skin twice daily; Once in the morning and once at night is a must – no matter if you slept on a clean pillowcase, went make up free or stayed all day indoors.
- Use a Corrector; Use a customised serum that targets your specific skins concerns to help take charge of your skincare routine
- Moisturise; Our skin craves hydration. A good moisturiser will help lock in essential hydration by protecting our lipid layer (barrier) and reduces the impacts of environmental factors such as Aircon, Heating and general toxins and pollutants.
- Protect; Wear SPF every day, even if you’re staying home all day. This is not negotiable. A good SPF will help protect against UVA rays which can cause a breakdown of our collagen and elastin.
You can include a gentle exfoliation and a targeted mask to enhance your routine twice a week.
We know for sure that an ideal routine should be tailored to your skin’s needs, so there’s no point grabbing the latest fad product if it’s not suited to your skin. What works for someone may not work for you.
If you’re unsure, book in for a consultation with a skin therapist to get a proper diagnosis and recommendations.
Eat for healthy skin:
Healthy, thriving skin starts from within. Reduce or avoid highly inflammatory foods such as refined sugars, processed foods and excess dairy. Instead, opt for whole foods rich in Antioxidants, Essential Fatty Acids, Vitamins and Minerals.
I know it’s not what everyone wants to hear — because it’s not a quick fix. But the reality is that no matter how many moisturisers you buy, your skin won’t look and feel nourished and healthy if you’re not eating well. The skin is an organ that reflects your overall health. It reflects your overall quality of diet, lifestyle and wellbeing. When these are not looked after, it is reflected in our skin as skin conditions such as acne, uneven skin tone, inflammation, dryness and even excess oil.
Shift your intentions from covering up skin issues to nourishing your skin from within. You’ll look fabulous — and you’ll feel so much better.
Have patience:
Have you ever heard the phrase ‘Patience is a Virtue’ or ‘Good things come to those who wait’? Well, they’re both true. Don’t experiment too much and if anything promises immediate results, be wary. If you feel like your routine is not working right away, remember to give it a chance to get used to the active ingredients before swapping it. The exception here is if there is an adverse reaction – in which case, stop using it right away.
Consistency is Key:
No matter your program, you need to commit to it and be consistent. Too often, get caught up in miracle ingredients and expect instant results, but real results don’t happen overnight.
Your skin renews itself every 28ish days (this is called a skin cycle). On average, it can take three cycles before you see any significant results.
Your skin will produce and maintain real results by doing little steps every day, morning and night.
Book a monthly Skin treatment:
Skin treatments are a great option to take a more targeted approach to your skin health. Booking in for monthly treatments allows us to work deeper and harder in the skin to enhance your results. Speak to a Skin Therapist to find out the best treatment for you.
Be kind to yourself:
How often do you catch yourself picking at a specific thing on your body and talking badly about it? Whether it’s a little fat roll or a vein or blemish, we often have this inner voice that puts us down, and we don’t even realise we are doing it.
It’s time to turn off that Itty Bitty Shitty Committee that lives in our brain and start talking to ourselves with self-love. Next time you hear that internal chatter, try swapping the self-sabotaging thoughts for things we love about ourselves.
The reality is that every skin has texture, pores, and the occasional breakout, so we need to stop chasing perfection. The goal is healthy and happy skin – not perfect skin. So please be kind to yourself.
